Keeper of Reign by Emma Right

A warm writers' welcome to author, Emma Right, and her book, Keeper of Reign. A copywriter for two major advertising agencies and winner of several awards, including the prestigious Clio Award, Right left the advertising world when she settled down to start a family.

And start a family she did! She is a happy wife and homeschool mother of five living in the Pacific West Coast of the USA. Besides running a busy home and looking after their five pets, which includes two cats, two bunnies and a Long-haired dachshund, she also writes stories for her children. She deeply loves the Lord and His Word, and when she doesn't have her nose in a book, she is telling her kids to get theirs in one.

Emma, How Would You Summarize of Keeper of Reign?

“Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?

For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.

Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family and possibly even reverse the age-long curse…provided Jules doesn't get himself killed first.”

Why Did You Write Keeper of Reign?

”When I first heard the Switchfoot song, "Meant to Live" (for so much more) it got me thinking about how far short each of us fall from our true potential. Christ really came to give us life, and life more abundantly, and yet the trials and troubles of this world reduce us, and it feels that our troubled world is so big. This is just like how it was for the Elfies who lived in Reign. Also I'd read Destined to Reign, and it inspired me to think of possibilities.

I wanted to write an allegorical fantasy about the fall of man and the redemption story set in a fantasy setting that's filled with danger and adventure. Something young readers can enjoy but still have a Christian message.

This is a young adult Christian fantasy that has a Christian theme, although it is not a preaching sort of book…more of an alternative for moms and grandmas looking for an alternative to Harry Potter/vampire-type fiction for their readers from age eleven and up.”

What Did You Hope to Convey in Keeper of Reign?

“I hope my readers can see that with the power of the gospel, we can overcome our problems and difficulties. I want to empower young readers with this message, that if they seek the truth (the Ancient Books, in Keeper of Reign) they will find wisdom and answers to life's problems. It doesn't mean the answers are going to come easy, but persistence will pay off, and the Bible has the answers.”

What are some of the Biblical imageries in this book?

"The name of "Gehzurolle", the evil Lord, is German, for Confounder, which essentially is what Satan is. Elfies are a cross between Elves (the physical and carnal part of Man) and fairies (the more ethereal, spirit side of humans.) And Whisperer represents the evil whisperings or rumors that tend to take us down or fill us with fear--one of the tactics that the Devil uses to try to crush us. I made Mosche, the Keeper, live behind a waterfall, because when we are soaked with the water of His Word, the Bible says, the enemy cannot touch us. And why "Roaring Falls?" Because when we are so filled with the hearing and hearing of the Word, our faith is built. There are a lot more Biblical imageries in the story. I tried to make it subtle so only Christians can pick these images up, as I am marketing the book as a secular fantasy, and hope that it would open doors for non-believing kids reading it."

Never Say Perfect Meets Boomer Lit Friday

Never Say Perfect is participating once more in Boomer Lit Friday! If you have been following the excerpts, Laina is realizing that Dan has slipped away to use the restroom just before their imminent boarding time in the airport and has yet to return to the waiting area. They have just spent a fabulous two weeks in a beach house in Pawleys Island in celebration of a second honeymoon that he had solely planned for her. The story picks up below...

Continuation of Chapter 1, Never Say Perfect:

Lost in the world of suspense-filled fiction, Laina was suddenly startled by the announcement that their flight was boarding. She carefully removed her reading glasses, placed them in their pink case and slid the novel and glasses into her large, fabric carry-on tote bag. Scanning the crowded sea of passengers for a glimpse of Dan, who hadn’t returned from the men’s room, she stood up to hopefully gain a better vantage point. Her emotions ranged from nervousness to annoyance as she stretched up on her toes and strained in an attempt to locate him. What could he possibly be doing that would take this long? Had he already boarded the flight? That thought was immediately dismissed, because Dan would never just leave her sitting there reading while he marched alone down the jetway.

The waiting area near their gate was rapidly emptying as the call for the last boarding zone was announced. Still there was no sign of Dan. Dear God, she thought, Where IS he? Tardiness was completely unacceptable to Dan. In fact, he trended toward being hyper-punctual. Often, when they were getting ready to go out to any function or to meet friends, he would pace back and forth, tapping his toe, waiting for her even when she wasn’t running late.

She wondered if she should go ahead and board. Remembering that Dan had protectively tucked both of their boarding passes into the pocket of his khaki shorts when they completed the security process, she suddenly felt helpless. Quickly dialing his cell phone number, she was disappointed when it immediately directed her into his voice mail, as though his phone had already been turned off.
