Memoir Writing Groups - Perhaps a Gentle Nudge to Success!

As a memoir writing teacher, I have heard some fascinating comments on the topic of writing life stories.  Remarks ranging from, “No one would care what I have to say about my life” to “People will think I’m conceited if I write my memoirs” just begin to scratch the surface.

I do everything within reason to assure the folks suffering from Doubting Thomas Syndrome that every person has a story worthy of sharing with future generations. This is how our families, many years down the road, will learn what our lives were like. Children who have never seen a typewriter, a reel-to-reel tape recorder, a drive-in movie, etc. should have the opportunity to learn how we experienced life.

Please do not think that only celebrities should write their memoirs. It is not a spirit of conceit in which memoirs are written, but a generous act that insures the preservation of family history.

Many memoir writers thrive in participating in memoir groups to trigger memories, share stories and make new friends. If you reside in the Myrtle Beach and surrounding area, two memoir group opportunities beginning in October, 2014 are awaiting you!

A Book on Celibacy...An archaic topic???

In our world of instant gratification and impatience, I know an author who has a message about celibacy. Celibacy? Wow! Is that an obsolete word? Not if you are waiting for that one special love of your life to appear. Yes, but how does one wade through all of the others before finding “the one” to whom they will share everything, including intimacy?

I know. Some readers are chuckling, saying that the very idea of waiting sounds archaic and puritanical. From the love-ins of the sixties to 2014, when it would seem that there are no sexual boundaries, Tranea Prosser would like to have a little chat with you. She has written a book entitled Celibacy: What Was I Thinking?

Tranea Prosser
I asked Tranea a few questions:

What was special about your book?

“I am able to make help people laugh with me as I make light of the heavy topic of celibacy, and I think that's a wonderful thing.”

What were you hoping to convey in this publication?

“To be proud of your choice to be celibate and continue to grow spiritually and emotionally through the process. It is a journey and cannot be rushed.”

Why did tackle this tough topic of celibacy?

Deuteronomy 6:5
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

“The topic selected me; it was not the other way around!  What do we hear stories about all the time today? There’s not much out there about self-love that is for sure. I can count on one hand and not use all of my fingers how many people have mentioned that they are celibate and waiting on God to deliver their mates.  There must be a need to raise the topic so that people won’t feel guilty or pitted for their choices. I think Celibacy should be celebrated just like all other special days like your Birthday, Valentine, and Anniversaries.  It is ok to celebrate yourself if you are celibate. I am having a time trying to type both words (celebrate and celibacy) on the same line! LOL!

You should celebrate celibacy because you are strong minded and focused on what you want. You are living with high standards that will make a person either mature or run off and leave you alone.  You are letting people know that you are serious about your life and livelihood. You have developed into a bold force to be recognized and respected . You can’t be easily fooled by people. Yes, you are worthy of celebration. Are you single and celibate? Have a glass of wine and kick your feet up.

Celibacy is a word that the church folk don’t hear from the pulpit. Practicing celibacy is honoring God with your body.  True Love Waits classes were not around when I was a teenager.  There aren’t any single’s conferences held in my state so I chose to be an encourager to any person of any age and gender who has made a commitment to God to remain chaste until they are married.  That’s what my book, Celibacy: What Was I Thinking? is basically about.  It lists steps on how to begin and maintain the celibate lifestyle. It also shows you that being celibate is doable, and it’s not a noose around your neck. Celibacy is not a bad word. But we can be a great supporter of each other in helping remember our first love and the promise we made to ourselves while living a celibate lifestyle."
